Professional Life
Early Career
From 1975 to 1981, Akhtar Sohail Chughtai held several positions at the beginning of his career. He served as a Demonstrator of Pathology at King Edward Medical College, Lahore, from 1975 to 1977, and then as a Demonstrator of Pathology on deputation to Postgraduate Medical Institute, Lahore, from 1977 to 1979. During this time, he also worked as a Medical Officer at the Pakistan Postal Department Dispensary, Lahore, from 1974 to 1975.
Allama Iqbal Medical College
Chughtai joined Allama Iqbal Medical College, Lahore, as an Assistant Professor of Anatomy & Histopathology from 1981 to 1983.
King Edward Medical College
From 1983 to 2000, he was affiliated with King Edward Medical College, Lahore. He served as an Assistant Professor of Pathology from 1983 to 1989 and then became an Associate Professor of Pathology from 1989 to 2000.
Other Appointments
Chughtai also served as a Professor of Pathology at Punjab Medical College, Faisalabad, from 2000 to 2002. In addition to his academic roles, he held several other professional appointments over the years, including as a Consultant Histopathologist at Chughtai Lab, Lahore, from 2003 to 2008, and as a Professor of Pathology at Lahore Medical & Dental College, Lahore, from 2003 to 2008.
Current Positions
Currently, Akhtar Sohail Chughtai is the Professor of Pathology and Head of the Department of Pathology at the Chughtai Institute of Pathology, Chughtai Lab, and Chughtai Foundation. He is also the CEO of the Chughtai Institute of Pathology and the Founder of the Chughtai Public Library. Additionally, he served as the President of the Pakistan Association of Pathologists from 2014 to 2016.
Achievements
- In 1979, Chughtai presented a paper at the 3rd Annual Scientific Conference of the Pakistan Association of Pathologists, marking the beginning of his illustrious career in pathology.
- In 1985, he attended the “Educational Evaluation” conference at King Edward Medical College, Lahore, and the 9th Annual Conference of the Pakistan Association of Pathologists.
- In 1986, Chughtai was involved in the 2nd International Conference of the Pakistan Association of Pathologists and a workshop on Gynecological Cytology and Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy Cytology.
- In 1987, he participated in a Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQ) course sponsored by the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Pakistan.
- In 1990, he attended a Postgraduate Refresher Course in Obstetrics and Gynecology at King Edward Medical College, Lahore.
- In 1991, he was part of the 5th Postgraduate Course in Surgery at King Edward Medical College, Lahore.
- In 1993, Chughtai attended the 38th Tutorial on Clinical Cytology in California, USA, and a Tutorial on Neoplastic Hematopathology in San Diego, California. He also participated in the 4th All Pakistan Biennial Cancer Conference.
- In 1995, he attended a course on “Quality Assurance in Histopathology and Cytopathology” sponsored by the British Council at the Postgraduate Medical Center in Leicester, UK.
- In 1996, he attended the XXII International Congress of the World Federation of Hemophilia in Dublin, Ireland.
- In 1997, Chughtai presented a paper on the “State of Hemophilia Care in Pakistan” at the Hemophilia Wet Workshop organized by the World Federation of Hemophilia in Surabaya, Indonesia, and participated in the Transfusion National VIII conference.
Contributions and Aspirations
Since starting his career in pathology in 1975, Dr. Akhtar Sohail Chughtai has been passionate about teaching, expanding diagnostics in Pakistan, and fostering international collaborations in pathology. He has played a vital role in the education and mentoring of undergraduate and postgraduate students. He founded the Chughtai Institute of Pathology, which offers both undergraduate and postgraduate training, including a bachelor’s program for Medical Lab Technologists.
As a dedicated member of the Pakistan Association of Pathologists, Dr. Chughtai has organized numerous high-profile international conferences and has been instrumental in initiating long-term collaborations between the Pakistan Association of Pathologists, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan, and the Royal College of Pathologists. His commitment to mentoring has led to significant achievements, including several pathologists and trainee fellows from the Chughtai Institute of Pathology successfully passing the FRC Path examination.
Dr. Chughtai’s ongoing goal is to elevate the Chughtai Institute of Pathology to become a globally recognized research, diagnostics, and postgraduate training institute.
